Book Awards by Academic Program

Academic book awards recognize scholarly excellence in each of our academic programs. The tradition of giving book awards at the School originated with Professor Porcher Taylor, paralegal studies program chair. Recipients are honored with a plaque and an inscribed volume, selected by the program chair.

Education

Samuel E. Perry, Jr. and Nancy B. Perry Book Award in recognition of Excellence in the Teacher Licensure and Master of Teaching Programs, grades K-6

Originally anonymously endowed, this book award for the Teacher Licensure Program was first presented in 2002. At SCS Night in 2006, the new title became official and was renamed the Samuel E. Perry and Nancy B. Perry Book Award in recognition of Excellence in the Teacher Licensure Program, Grades K-6. Dr. Perry served as chair of our Education program for many years. Effective with the 2019-20 academic year, the award was renamed to its present title.

Ann C. Taylor Book Award in recognition of Excellence in the Teacher Licensure and Master of Teaching Programs, grades 7-12

Created for the May 11, 2006, SCS Night, this award was endowed by Porcher L. Taylor, the SPCS Paralegal Program Chair, to honor his mother, Ann C. Taylor. Ms. Taylor has had an extended career in education and serves on several boards to champion education and leadership potential for women. Effective with the 2019-20 academic year, the award was renamed to its present title.

James W. Lanham Award for Excellence in Curriculum and Instruction

Established in 2014 and endowed by friends and family in memory of Dr. James Lanham, a long-time and dedicated faculty members of the SPCS Education Department, it was created to recognize the outstanding achievements of a graduate in the Curriculum and Instruction Program.

Catherine S. Fisher Award for Excellence in Educational Leadership

This book award was endowed by friends, colleagues and family members in honor of Catherine S. Fisher who served as Program Chair in the School from 2003 until 2014. It was established in 2014 to recognize an outstanding graduate in the SPCS Educational Leadership Program.

Steve Neal Book Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement

Originated in 2006 and endowed by Dr. Richard Leatherman, this Human Resource Management award commemorates the achievements of Captain Steven R. Neal of the Chesterfield County Police Department. He retired in 2011 after a 29-year career with the department.

George E. Christopher and George W. Swartz Memorial Book Award

This book award for a graduate in the Information Systems Program was created beginning with the SCS Night, May 5, 2004, and endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Ned K. Swartz in memory of their fathers. Dr. Swartz served as our Associate Dean from October 2001 to June 2015.

McDonald Davis Jr. Book Award

Created the academic year 2005-2006, this IT Management book award was endowed by Dr. McDonald Davis, III in honor of his dad, McDonald Davis, Jr. Don Davis served as an adjunct professor in Information Systems from 1997 to 2014.

Kuehl Book Award in Recognition of Excellence in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts Program

Originally created in 2000 and called the Investment Consultant and Management Company of Virginia Book Award in the Liberal Arts, it was awarded to the top graduate in the BLA Program. In 2019, it was renamed in honor of the donor, Bill Kuehl.

Daniel McDonald Roberts and Frances Taylor Roberts Master of Liberal Arts Memorial Book Award

At the 50th anniversary SPCS Night event, May 8, 2013, the School announced that Program Chair Dr. Dan Roberts had endowed a book award for the top graduate in the MLA Program. It was created to honor the memory of his parents, Daniel McDonald Roberts and Frances Taylor Roberts.

Nonprofit Studies

Louis J. Narduzzi Memorial Book Award

This award was initially formed in 2000 to honor a graduate in the Emergency Services Management Program. It was endowed by students and friends of Dean James L. Narduzzi in 2000 in honor of Dean Narduzzi’s father, a policeman for 36 years. After the elimination of the ESM Program in 2015, the award was renamed to honor a graduate in the Nonprofit Studies Master’s Program.

William R. Marshall Jr. Memorial Book Award

This book award, in recognition of excellence in the Paralegal Studies Program, was created in 2001 and endowed by family and friends in memory of William R. Marshall, Jr., (UR Law School, 1965). Bill Marshall taught in the SCS for over 30 years and brought a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to students in the program.
