The Leadership in Government Seminar offers a targeted training experience for state and local government employees, focusing on the distinct challenges and opportunities of public sector leadership. This program covers the foundational principles of leadership and strategic planning and the nuances of crisis communication and ethical budgeting.

Designed to foster effective leadership skills, this seminar empowers participants to drive meaningful change, innovate within their roles, and lead with confidence and integrity in a government setting.

The seminar’s structure reflects a commitment to real-world applicability, with each module building upon the last to create a cohesive and powerful learning experience. Participants will gain practical skills and strategies and develop a strong ethical foundation to guide their personal leadership style.

The Leadership in Government Seminar is lead by a distinguished instructional team of former heads of state executive agencies, individuals who have navigated the complex challenges and opportunities of leadership at the highest level of Virginia government.

These professionals bring a wealth of experience, insights, and practical knowledge to the seminar. Their backgrounds include public administration, finance, legislative management, and strategic planning.

Course of Study

Hosted on the University of Richmond campus, the Leadership in Government seminar is structured as a blend of interactive lectures, case studies, group discussions and practical exercises.

This intensive seminar is designed to accommodate the schedules of busy professionals, requiring a 5-day commitment. The Seminar begins at 12 p.m. on Monday and concludes at 12 p.m. Friday.

Modules

Foundations of Effective Leadership

Grounds participants in the essentials of leadership, strategic planning, and the distinct challenges of government leadership, setting the stage for deeper exploration.

Strategic Planning

Focuses on vision creation and communication, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement and humility in leadership.

Leading as a Peer

Tackles the unique aspects of peer leadership in government, including navigating HR landscapes and leading without traditional authority symbols.

Crisis Communications

Equips learners with strategies for both proactive and reactive communication, preparing them to manage crises effectively.

Budget & Planning

Delves into the principles of ethical financial stewardship, critical for transparency and efficiency in managing public resources and government operations.

Ethics in Leadership

A thematic thread woven throughout the seminar, this module explores the foundational dilemmas leaders in the public sector face, from decision-making to managing conflicts of interest, ensuring their actions consistently reflect the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.

Ideal for current and aspiring leaders at all levels of state and local government, this seminar is tailored for those looking to enhance their leadership capabilities, including department heads, managers, and staff poised for leadership roles.

Program Fee

The seminar fee is $1,995 and includes tuition, materials, welcome reception, break services, lunch, dinner, graduation breakfast and certification. The program fee with lodging is $2,495 and includes all of the above plus four (4) nights lodging. Lodging is single occupancy and arrangements are made by the University of Richmond. No application is required to register for the Leadership in Government Seminar.

If you have not taken a professional education course through SPCS at the University of Richmond, you will be asked to create an online account in our registration system before registering for the course. Payment in full is due when registering.
