Nonprofit Management

The School of Professional & Continuing Studies offers professional training and development classes and programs focused on nonprofit fundraising, marketing, communications and management through the Institute on Philanthropy (IOP). These courses and programs are separate from our graduate Nonprofit Studies program, but both focus on developing and improving the important work of nonprofit organizations and NGOs in the Richmond region and around the world.

Our professional Nonprofit Management classes and programs cover such topics as fund development, grant writing, leadership development, nonprofit sustainability, nonprofit communications, and planned giving.

Our Nonprofit Management classes and programs seek to extend the values and resources of a liberal arts education into sustainable talent, program and fund development and management.

     Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations

    Online: Fundraising is one of the central activities of a nonprofit organization and nonprofit management. To help finance operating budgets, nonprofits must raise money every year. In addition, special projects and improvements to facilities may be needed. This course offers an introduction to fundraising for nonprofit organizations, with an emphasis on the fundamental issues. Self-paced (three months access) through MindEdge.

    Introduction to Grant Writing

    Online: This introductory-level course offers a guide to the basics of grant writing. The course explores the relationship between grant writing and an organization’s strategy for fundraising.     Introduction to Nonprofit Management

    Online: This course serves as a critical introduction to the fundamentals of nonprofit organizations. You’ll gain an understanding of the nonprofit sector and the issues that leaders face in this exciting and growing field. You’ll also be exposed to the major areas of responsibility for nonprofit leaders, including strategy, managing employees and volunteers, fundraising, grant writing, board governance, marketing, innovation and social media.     Principles of Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations

    Online: Effective marketing is how nonprofit organizations determine the needs of their clients and their donors. This course examines how nonprofits use marketing to publicize their mission and to gather contributions of time and money.     Social Media for Nonprofits

    Online: Effective use of social media as a marketing tool is often essential for nonprofits to get attention in this digital world. This course introduces learners to the use of social media in communicating, marketing, public relations, and fundraising for nonprofits.     Institute on Philanthropy

    IOP Fund Development Institute

    Online: Focus on the “art and science” of fundraising, structured around the work that fundraisers do. The format follows the fundraising cycle and incorporates fundamentals, practical application, discussion of the ways of giving, and more. Instructional team led (start dates vary) through SPCS IOP.

    IOP Grant Writing Institute

    Online: Incorporates the latest trends with theoretical and practical insights in grant writing and management. You’ll have the opportunity to apply what you learn to your own organization’s project and develop your network of people to help you secure funding. Instructional team led (start dates vary) through SPCS IOP.

    IOP Strategic Communications for Nonprofits Institute

    Online: Develop analytical insight and professional skills needed to elevate public awareness about your nonprofit and generate financial support for its mission.     IOP Planned Giving Institute

    Online: Learn to develop a comprehensive planned giving program, which is much more than soliciting gifts through wills. Work to understand the donor’s perspective, determine the best type of funding possibilities and strategies, research and identify donors, market the appropriate strategies, and manage a program and steward your donors. Instructional team led (start dates vary) through SPCS IOP.

    Nonprofit Management & Administration

    Budgeting in a Nonprofit Organization

    Online: If you’re involved in a nonprofit organization, you likely know all too well the importance of budgeting. In this course, learn the uses and functions of budgets and the relationship between strategic budgeting and tactical budgeting. You’ll also learn about the organization-wide budget and different budget systems.     Certificate in Nonprofit Management

    Online: This online certificate program introduces learners to key current management issues for nonprofit organizations. Fundraising, board and volunteer development, budgeting, reading financial statements, leadership, marketing, and setting strategic direction are all addressed. After completing all the courses, learners will engage in a simulation meant to test the concepts covered in the courseware.     Strategy for Nonprofit Organizations

    Online: A nonprofit’s strategy constitutes its decisions about what it will do and how it will do it. Nonprofit managers are critical to successfully implementing strategy since they are responsible for carrying out the actions that will support it.     IOP Nonprofit Leadership Lab

    Online: Designed for experienced nonprofit leaders and managers, provides a cohort-based networking opportunity for nonprofit executives to discuss leading through crisis, executing organizational change, and conducting continuous quality improvement with trusted, knowledgeable colleagues. Cohort members learn about the challenges each person is facing, provide resources, and encourage optimal outcomes. Facilitator-led (start dates vary) through SPCS IOP.

    Leadership in a Nonprofit Organization

    Online: The success of any nonprofit organization can rely on the quality of its leadership. This course begins by examining leadership theories as well as key qualities and ethics within leadership. After establishing this foundation, the course focuses on leadership in the nonprofit sector, including the leadership shortage and possible solutions. Self-paced (three months access) through MindEdge.

    Nonprofit Board and Volunteer Development

    Online: Board members are a special type of volunteer, helping to guide the direction of a nonprofit, to promote the organization in the community, and to ensure that the nonprofits mission is fulfilled. Learning how best to manage the board and other volunteers is a critical part of nonprofit management. Institute on Philanthropy The Institute on Philanthropy (IOP) educates nonprofit professionals, volunteers, donors and community leaders in ethical and effective fundraising, marketing and board development strategies. Nonprofit Staff & Leadership Training
