At the School of Professional & Continuing Studies (SPCS), we’re proud to provide access to the University of Richmond for motivated learners like you: adult students, working professionals and anyone who has taken a less-than-traditional path to higher education.

We believe online learning allows us to expand access to the University while delivering programs that are flexible, convenient and as rigorous and engaging as in-person programs. We’re able to leverage the resources of the University to provide the Richmond online learning experience wherever you are.

Online Learning at SPCS

Flexibility & Independence

Our 15-week online courses provide flexibility and independence. Most classes (all in the Interdisciplinary Studies program) are self-paced with deliverable deadlines and no scheduled remote sessions. Certificate programs include limited classes that require scheduled remote sessions. Deliverables may include readings, assignments, discussion posts, projects and papers.

Rigorous & Challenging

You can expect to devote 9-12 hours per week on each 3-hours online course. Some courses may vary in intensity, and the hours of coursework may change. But rest assured, your coursework will be rigorous, challenging and thought-provoking. It will also be engaging and rewarding and will require serious time management, organization and digital citizenship to be successful.

Caring & Supportive

When you need it, we’re here for you. You’ll have 24/7 access to resources and tips through the SPCS Student Online Support Community. Remote access to campus support services, including Career Services. Easy access to your instructor through Blackboard and weekly virtual office hours. And a variety of meeting options with your academic advisor, including in-person if you live in the Richmond region.

Engagement & Community

Self-paced doesn’t mean you’ll study alone. You’ll engage in interactive instruction and responsive feedback from classmates and faculty. You’ll collaborate with classmates to post notes, schedule timelines and develop project content in Blackboard. You’ll connect with other online and seat-based students from across the School through virtual events and activities and occasional in-person events in the Richmond region.

Online learning can be convenient and offer a level of flexibility that a classroom-based course may not, especially for adult students. But the self-paced nature of online learning also requires discipline, time management and organization skills. Spiders Online

The University of Richmond has been approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). That means that we can meet the educational needs of online learners in nearly every state across the country. There are Spiders everywhere online, and that’s a good thing!
