Certified Financial Planner

Over the last several years, financial advisors who hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ credential have reported an increase in gross earnings of $20,000-$40,000 in the year following their CFP® certification. More than 95 percent of them report feeling satisfied or very satisfied with their careers.

The School of Professional & Continuing Studies offers two CFP® certification education programs through our partner Dalton Education.

Certification Program Options

We offer a self-paced online learning experience or a virtual classroom (synchronous) learning experience in partnership with Dalton Education. To learn more and register, read below and visit the Dalton Education CFP Education Packages page.

Self-Paced

The Self-Paced Online CFP Certification Education Program is an independent, online, self-paced program designed to fulfill the education requirement to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination. Highlights of the program:

  • Finish course in 9 months or less
  • Your assigned advisor will stay in touch and help keep you on pace
  • Online modules, including recorded whiteboard lectures, videos, interactive games and exercises - available anytime
  • Course designed by instructors that served on the CFP Board of Examiners
  • Access to watch recordings of exam reviews where instructors cover the most important concepts for the course and what is most likely to be on the exams

Virtual Classroom

The Virtual Classroom CFP® Certification Education Program is a Web-delivered, classroom-based, live and fully interactive financial planning program designed to meet the education requirements for the CFP® Certification Examination. Highlights of the program:

  • Live, online instructor-led classes
  • Access to Dalton Education faculty
  • All live lectures are recorded for future viewing at your convenience
  • Flexibile schedules with two live classes every week; programs begin in January, March, May, July, September, and November of each year
  • If life gets in the way and you need to pause your program, come back anytime at no extra charge

Additional Information

Admission Criteria

It’s strongly recommended that students have a four-year degree before enrolling in the program. The CFP Board requires individuals to have obtained an undergraduate degree prior to being allowed to use the CFP credentials.

Transfer and Exemption Policy

The University of Richmond will allow students to transfer credit up to two courses from another board registered program and receive a tuition discount for each course.
