IES Abroad Summer Internships

The University partners with IES Abroad to offer international summer internships in several cities worldwide. IES is responsible for securing placements and housing assignments. Students interested in applying for an internship through IES should complete the IES application and the UR participation form (available in January).

Students from all majors are eligible to apply. The placements listed below are available, but custom placements may also be made, depending on availability. Discuss your specific internship needs with our Summer School program manager, Cheryl Genovese, at cgenoves@richmond.edu or 804-289-8134.

IES internships are open to students in all years, including first-years and those who have just graduated. Continuing UR students may be eligible for funding from the UR Summer Fellowships or Weinstein Summer Grants programs.

IES Abroad Application

The application deadline for programs in Paris is February 2, 2022 and London is February 3, 2022. The deadline for all other IES Abroad internship programs is February 10, 2022.

Visit the IES Abroad application and select the “Apply” button
Sign Up for MyIESAbroad Account, indicating your school as “University of Richmond”
When prompted, confirm your school, destination and desired term (Summer 2021)
Complete all required sections of the IES Abroad application
Submit completed application
If accepted into an internship, pay non-refundable $500 deposit with Confirmation Form

Register Participation with UR

Students who plan to participate in a summer internship abroad must register their participation with UR using GatewayAbroad by February 15, 2022.

Complete the application in GatewayAbroad
Click on the “Register Your Participation” button
Log into GatewayAbroad using your UR NetID and password
Complete the online registration for your program
Contact Cheryl Genovese in the Summer School Office to submit $300 deposit

To earn academic credit for your internship, you must coordinate with a Richmond faculty member and pay the standard tuition rate. Complete the Individual Instruction Course Request form and submit to the Office of the Registrar in Queally Center. Internships completed for college credit may be eligible for federal financial aid. Contact the Financial Aid office for details.

Summer Fellowship Funding

Summer internships abroad may be eligible for UR Summer Fellowship funding, including the Weinstein Summer Grant. Maximum awards: $4,000 UR Summer Fellowships, $3,500 for Weinstein Summer Grants. These opportunities are not available to non-UR students.

Apply to any Fellowship programs that align with your internship goals and requirements
Weinstein Summer Grants offer an airfare supplement; complete as needed
