Beer Brewer Professional Certificate - Richmond

The University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies, in collaboration with community partners around the metro-Richmond area, offers a beer brewer professional certificate for those interested in entering or advancing in the growing craft beer industry.

The certificate program guides students through the entire craft brewing business, from procuring high quality ingredients and raw materials through the proper handling, processing, packaging and distribution of the final product. The program highlights local, sustainable practices by partnering with Central Virginia suppliers, breweries and distributors.

Our Beer Brewer Professional Certificate classes are held in breweries around the Richmond region and on the University of Richmond campus. Students will receive detailed class schedules and locations prior to the start of each cohort.

Cohort Details

  • The Richmond program admits applicants into Fall and Spring cohorts annually.
  • Classes are offered in person on the UR campus and in local breweries, with select sessions offered remotely.
  • Classes are held on Monday evenings, 6-9 p.m., along with occassional Saturday field experiences.
  • Detailed class locations and schedules will be provided upon access into the program.

Students who complete the certificate program will be well prepared to enter the craft brewing industry in a variety of roles, from procurement and supply chain management to beer server to brewmaster. By collaborating with local partners, earning the certificate positions graduates well to start or advance their career in the beer brewing industry.

Earning the Beer Brewer Professional Certificate earns 10 CEUs that can be applied toward professional development goals or requirements. The certificate takes one year to complete and requires successfully completing all modules and field experiences. Review cohort schedules for details.

Certificate Requirements

The certificate requires successfully completing all 11 modules. Modules are divided into three focus areas:

  • Introduction to Brewing (3 modules)
  • Brew Science & Brewery Processes (6 modules)
  • Brewing as a Business (2 modules)

4 Field Experiences

The certificate requires successfully completing all 4 field experiences. Experiences are provided at local breweries and offer the following:

  • Brewery tours and craft brew days
  • Hands-on craft brewing experience
  • Networking opportunities with local brewing professionals
