Retired professor Sam Perry named adjunct professor emeritus by trustees

At the February meeting of the University of Richmond Board of Trustees, Dr. Sam Perry, retired adjunct professor of education, was awarded the title and status of Adjunct Professor Emeritus. The honor is reserved for adjunct professors who have shown long-time dedication to the University of Richmond.

Perry’s career began by serving 35 years in public education. After concluding his time as a teacher, principal, instructional director, and Division Superintendent of Amelia County Schools, he set his sights on higher education.

In 2000, he was hired as the first SPCS Director of the Teacher Licensure Program at the University. His vision was to develop and support opportunities for prospective K-12 teachers to work with practitioners and to provide quality courses for current teachers seeking to improve their craft. He performed his responsibilities as director with passion, and the SPCS Education Department has continued to benefit from his energy and devotion. Today, the School’s Master of Teaching degree is the ongoing legacy of Perry’s work as director.

In Dean Jamelle Wilson’s nomination letter on behalf of the SPCS faculty to Provost Legro, she noted the following about Perry’s longtime dedication to UR and SPCS:

Perry has served as a dedicated and highly qualified professional educator, and we are indebted to him for his commitment to the profession and to our institution. In recognition of his loyal and devoted service to the University of Richmond during his many years of service to his students and to the University, I recommend that Dr. Sam Perry be awarded the title of Adjunct Professor Emeritus of the University of Richmond as of the time of his retirement.

Just before being named Adjunct Faculty Emeritus, Perry was honored at the Spring 2022 SPCS Faculty Meeting with his 20-year service award.
