Charlee Breeden, GC'18, named 2022 outstanding assistant principal

SPCS alum Charlee Breeden, GC’18, has been named the 2022 Outstanding Secondary Assistant Principal of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP).

Breeden has served as associate and assistant principal at Tomahawk Creek Middle School in Chesterfield County Public Schools since 2017. During that time, she’s provided instructional leadership for the school’s professional learning communities, project-based learning activities, positive behavior interventions and support program, and technology integration.

Breeden led efforts to move students forward academically and behaviorally through various incentive programs, the development of a structured attendance plan for families with students struggling with attendance, and a new restorative re-entry plan. When she noted that over the past two years teachers were struggling to find joy in the profession, she organized ways to lift teacher morale, including duty coverage by administrators and the much-appreciated classroom visits with the “TCMS Coffee Cart.”

Tomahawk Creek principal Rebecca Thompson, GC’14, also an SPCS alum, praised Breeden for her commitment for student success, nothing that “our educational community is fortunate to have such an outstanding professional.”

VASSP Executive Director Randy D. Barrack explained the goal of the Outstanding Secondary Assistant Principal award, to “identify and showcase the best assistant principals across the Commonwealth so we can capture and share their effective practices.” About Breeden, Barrack noted that she “offers considerable experience and expertise from which practitioners can glean valuable insights.”

Breeden will be honored for her accomplishments at the June 2022 Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition, and recognized nationally at the 2022 National Principals Conference, with other state Assistant Principals of the Year.

Breeden earned a post-master’s Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) through SPCS in 2018. Thompson earned an M.Ed. in ELPS in 2014.
