The power of connections
SPCS Student Focus
Attending the University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies (UR SPCS) is about more than just earning a degree—it’s about the connections you make and the support you find along the way. For Tanner Atkinson and Brandon Boner, this has proven true at every step of their journey.
Both Atkinson and Boner completed Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies (BSPS) degrees, majoring in Information Security, after transferring to SPCS from Reynolds Community College. Both graduated in December 2024 and intend to walk at May Commencement Exercises.
Atkinson’s path began by earning an associate’s degree at Reynolds in information technology. Upon completion, he set his sights on earning a bachelor’s degree. As a first-generation college student, Atkinson explored his options carefully and ultimately chose UR for the specialized major in Information Security, flexible learning options, and the community’s strong commitment to student success.
I want others to know that my path to UR SPCS was not a straight line, but every twist and turn [has] led me to where I’m meant to be.
“I want others to know that my path to UR SPCS was not a straight line,” Atkinson reflected, “but every twist and turn [has] led me to where I’m meant to be.”
Atkinson’s initial encounters with SPCS were positive, and they inspired him to reach out to a fellow information technology student at Reynolds, Brandon Boner. Since both were finishing their associate’s degrees, Atkinson saw an opportunity to share the benefits of the SPCS program with Boner. Boner had been searching for a program that offered flexibility, respected his military experience as a United States Navy veteran, and aligned with his career goals. It was Atkinson’s encouragement that became the turning point for Boner.
“Tanner’s encouragement to choose to attend UR was the main reason why I chose to come to this school, or even considered it as an option for me,” said Boner. “Prior to Tanner telling me how great UR and the SPCS program is, I would have thought it was out of my reach.”
The two soon became classmates in the SPCS Information Security degree program. Together, Atkinson and Boner have navigated their studies, supporting and motivating each other along the way.
“Working with [Brandon] has not only made the process more enjoyable but also more motivating,” Atkinson explained. “His viewpoint on challenging assignments has pushed me to think in new ways, and his encouragement has helped me stay focused when things felt overwhelming.”
Atkinson and Boner’s story is a testament to the power of connections, determination, and a supportive community. Together, they have turned the challenge of higher education into an inspiring journey, and they are eager to celebrate when they walk across the stage at SPCS Commencement in May.
