Paralegal Professional Certificate
Build the practical legal skills employers expect. Then go further.
While lawyers assume ultimate responsibility for legal cases, they often delegate many of their tasks to paralegals. In fact, paralegals, also called legal assistants, are assuming a growing range of tasks in legal offices.
The Paralegal Professional Certificate Program at the University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) is a comprehensive, career-focused set of credentials designed for individuals seeking to enter the legal profession or strengthen their existing legal support skills. The program provides rigorous training in paralegal fundamentals, legal research, legal writing, and litigation, followed by the opportunity to earn an Advanced Certificate at no additional cost.
Whether you are launching a new career, transitioning into the legal field, or enhancing your professional credentials, the Paralegal Professional Certificate offers a clear, structured pathway to success.
Course of Study
The Paralegal Professional Certificate consists of four sequential, eight-week modules, designed to build knowledge and skills progressively across core areas of paralegal practice. Designed fully online for working adults, students progress as a cohort but may stop and start between modules at their own pace and are not required to complete all modules in consecutive semesters.
-
1. Paralegal I
Build a strong foundation in the legal system and the paralegal profession.
Students are introduced to the structure and function of the American judicial system, including both federal and state courts, their jurisdiction, and basic procedures. Students also examine the role of the paralegal in the practice of law, including professional responsibilities, ethical considerations, and the day-to-day operations of a legal office. The module provides a practical introduction to how legal matters move through the courts and how paralegals support attorneys, clients, and law offices.
-
2. Legal Research
Develop essential legal research and communication skills.
This module introduces students to legal terminology, the foundations of legal research, and the structure and style of common legal documents. Students learn how to locate, interpret, and apply legal authorities while becoming familiar with the tools and methods used in modern legal research. Through guided exercises in research and writing, students build confidence in analyzing legal sources and communicating legal information clearly and effectively.
-
3. Legal Writing
Strengthen your analytical writing and legal reasoning skills.
As a continuation of Legal Research, this module moves into more advanced research assignments and written legal analysis. Students deepen their understanding of legal authorities, refine their ability to organize and present legal arguments, and gain experience preparing more sophisticated legal documents. Emphasis is placed on clarity, precision, and professional writing skills essential to legal settings.
-
4. Litigation
Gain a realistic introduction to litigation practice.
This module provides an overview of the litigation process from initial case investigation through trial, settlement, and post-trial proceedings. Students examine fact investigation, the progression of a lawsuit, pleadings, discovery, evidence, motions practice, and trial preparation. The module emphasizes the realities of litigation practice and the important role paralegals play in supporting attorneys throughout each stage of a case.
