Professional Brewers Series

Take your brewing knowledge to the next level.

The UR Professional Brewers Series builds on skills and techniques covered in the Beer Brewer Professional Certificate. The series is designed to provide professional educational experiences for the growing Richmond craft brewing industry.

Courses in the Professional Brewers Series will provide students the opportunity to learn specialized fields of knowledge that local brewing experts have forged through years of experience in the industry.

We seek to offer professional development opportunities for professionals and pre-professional across the craft beer industry. The series features a rotating selection of classes and certifications. Examples include:

  • Distribution
  • Draught system management
  • Beer recipe creation/formulation
  • Advanced brewing processes (like mixed fermentation and barrelling)

Available Courses

Beer Recipe Formulation

icon The Beer Recipe Formulation course combines scientific formulas, raw material choices, equipment and creativity in a course that explains the necessary steps to build and brew a successful beer recipe. Must be at least 21 to participate.

Draught Beer Systems & Quality Certificate

iconThe Draught Beer Systems & Quality Certificate course teaches students how to properly maintain draught systems for craft beer. Great for restaurant professionals and front of house managers. Must be at least 21 to participate.

Barrel Works for Brewers

barrel iconThe Barrel Works for Brewers course examines barrel parts, how oak effects beer flavor, the processes of filling and emptying barrels, aging techniques, and care for barrels and the beers within. Must be at least 21 to participate.

Mixed Fermentation Brewing

fermentation iconThe Mixed Fermentation Brewing course builds on skills from Beer Recipe Formulation and examines the use of multiple yeast and bacteria cultures in beer fermentation. Must be at least 21 to participate.
