Personal Fitness Trainer

The School of Professional & Continuing Studies, in collaboration with the World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.), offers a Personal Trainer Certification Program designed to help you start a successful career as a trainer. Taught over a six-week period, the program covers key topics including biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment.

Whether needed for your career or for your own personal knowledge, get all the information you need to become a Certified Personal Trainer. This course is formatted as a 60-hour program and is composed of 15 hours of lecture, 15 hours of practical training, and a 30-hour internship. It covers topics including biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment. W.I.T.S. is the only major certifying body in the country providing comprehensive practical training and internship components.

After successfully completing this program, students will be able to:

  • Understand and describe basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology
  • Assess an individual’s level of fitness using American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines
  • Design and customize exercise programs
  • Demonstrate proper execution of resistance, cardio-respiratory and flexibility exercises
  • Identify and demonstrate at least one strength exercise for every major muscle group
  • Explain ACSM and AHA recommendations for cardiovascular exercise

This course is approved or accredited by the following groups:

  • NCCA: National Commission for Certifying Agencies (written & practical skill competency exams)
  • ACE: American Council on Education (3 college credits)
  • NIRSA: National Intramural Recreation & Sports Association
  • IACET: International Association of Continuing Education & Training

Requirements & Prerequisites

High school diploma or GED required. This is a beginning level course and no prerequisites are required.

Tuition fee includes 60-hours of lecture and practice training. Students must purchase Fitness Professional’s Handbook (7th ed.), ISBN 978-1492523376, prior to the start of class.

Your certification as a Personal Fitness Trainer will be issued after successful completion of this 60-hour program, a 30-hour internship, and proof of adult CPR & AED certification. SPCS provides only the 60-hour classroom experience.
