John Wilbert, GC’24, has published an article titled “Chronic Absenteeism: Data for Positive Change” in the 2024 VASCD Journal. Wilbert serves as an English Language Arts teacher at Robious Middle School in Chesterfield County Public Schools.
The abstract of the article appears below. You may access the entire volume, where Wilbert’s article starts on page 148.
As students returned to the classroom following the shutdown of schools during the COVID-19 outbreak, two historical student data trends soon emerged. Chronic student absenteeism rates rose to an all-time high by 2022, while students’ standardized test schools dropped considerably. Not to mention, teacher absences also increased significantly. In “Chronic Student Absenteeism: How to Use Data for Positive Change,” John Wilbert performs a deep dive into attendance rates and learning losses, offering strategic approaches to improving both attendance and student engagement in K-12 schools.
Wilbert earned an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies through SPCS. His capstone project served as a starting point for the article.
