Osher Members on the Go
Article by Barbara Kaplowitz
The Osher Theatre Lovers group came together in June 2014 as a result of interest by Linda Turner in developing a group of Osher members who love live theatre. Under Linda’s tutelage, the group chose four plays to attend, each of a different genre, at a different theatre, with different audience appeal. Linda sent emails as reminders and handled the logistics, the financials, the reservations, the group negotiations, the car-pooling, the after-theatre group talk backs, and dinners for those of us lucky to attend.
A large group of Osher members embarked on our first theatre venture to see The Book of Mormon at the Altria Theatre. Sitting in excellent seats, we enjoyed the laughter and ribald humor, delightful music, and comedic acting of an accomplished ensemble. Everyone was excited that the Osher theatre group had an auspicious beginning.
The group continued to explore new venues and dramatic presentations as well as new ideas.
Caroline, or Change at the Cadence Theatre was a powerful musical reflection on the civil rights movement of the 60's.
Now Then Again, at the CAT Theatre, was a love story between two physicists with an interesting time twist.
The final play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by noted playwright Christopher Durang was a zany comedy (very) loosely based on Chekhov's works. We saw this play at the Neil November Theatre.
The group talk-backs are post-performance discussions, run by the theatre and include the actors, directors and others involved in the production. These were intimate and informative, giving us insight into the experiences of the actors and the set designer, the messages being portrayed, and the detailed backstage mechanics.
It was a fledgling season of new ideas, new plays, new friends, and new adventures. For those who joined us, we are grateful. We look forward to the 2015-2016 season with much anticipation.
Below you will find the plays that the committee has chosen for the 2015-2016 season. We encourage your participation and look forward to seeing you in the Osher Theatre Lovers interest group.
