Bagby encourages graduating SPCS students to continue inspiring others by being themselves
SPCS Commencement Feature
The University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) held its commencement ceremony on May 10, featuring a deeply personal address by graduating student Richard Bagby. Rather than offering traditional inspirational advice, Bagby's speech focused on the inspirational nature of the graduating class itself, highlighting their individual journeys and shared commitment to perseverance.
Bagby began by acknowledging the faculty, specifically mentioning Professor John Zinn for their role in his academic success. He expressed profound gratitude for his family, crediting his parents for instilling the value of education and his partner Andi for her unwavering support. “It took every bit of my 41 years… to buy in, but here we are,” Bagby remarked, underscoring the personal significance of this achievement.
Instead of offering typical commencement platitudes, Bagby redirected the focus to his fellow graduates, stating, “Each of you is an inspiration to me, whether I've met you or not.” He then shared powerful anecdotes of several classmates: a Sudanese immigrant who overcame immense obstacles to achieve success, a sixty-year-old man continuing his education alongside a successful career, and an army veteran seeking a new beginning.
Bagby emphasized the shared characteristics of these diverse individuals: “perseverance, determination, and pursuit of knowledge.” He recognized the numerous challenges faced by his fellow graduates, including the balancing of work, family, and education. “You come from all walks of life,” Bagby observed, citing examples of parents balancing childcare and studies and working professionals attending classes after long workdays.
Bagby’s address implicitly challenged the conventional commencement speech format. Instead of offering external motivation, Bagby found inspiration within the graduating class itself. He shared a mutual celebration of resilience and achievement.
Bagby’s concluding remarks were a call to action, not for the graduates to follow his example, but to continue being themselves. “You — sorry, we — are inspirations to many. Keep doing that, keep being you!” he exclaimed, fostering a sense of collective empowerment.
Bagby’s address was a testament to the university’s focus on providing educational opportunities for non-traditional students who overcome considerable challenges to pursue their academic goals.
