Live and Learn 2.0 Report Release
In 2017, Tom Shields, Chair of Graduate Education and Associate Professor of Education and Leadership Studies, led a small group of academics and housing advocates in writing a report titled Confronting School and Housing Segregation in the Richmond Region: Can We Learn and Live Together? The report was influential for how it examined the nexus of housing and school segregation in the Richmond metro-area.
This past year, Shields gathered a larger group of academics, nonprofit leaders, and housing advocates to write an updated Learn and Live report focusing on the current state of education and housing segregation in the Richmond metro area. The report, Learn and Live 2.0, provides visual illustrations, accompanied by narrative descriptions, of several key trends in the metro-Richmond area: demographic change over the past decade, the link between school and neighborhood segregation in our region, and the connections between housing segregation and unequal educational opportunities and outcomes.
