University of Richmond honors excellence in library research with 2025 John Miers Award winners
The University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS), in partnership with Boatwright Memorial Library, is proud to announce this year’s recipients of the John Miers Award for Excellence in Library Research. The award, established in 2019 to honor the late John Miers, C’13, recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional skill and originality in the use of library research resources.
This year, two outstanding projects were selected by a joint committee of library staff and SPCS faculty for the undergraduate and graduate categories.
The graduate award went to LaRee Sugg, GC’25, for her project titled “Impact of Inequitable Access to Aquatic Facilities on African-Americans in Richmond, Virginia, and Surrounding Counties.” Completed as part of the Spring 2025 MLA Seminar, the committee highlighted Sugg’s rigorous research, originality, and meaningful engagement with issues of equity and community in Richmond. Her work sheds new light on historical and contemporary challenges, exemplifying the award’s emphasis on both scholarly rigor and thoughtful command of research materials. Sugg’s project was nominated by faculty members Carol Wittig and Lynda Kachurek. Sugg graduated in May 2025 with a master of liberal arts degree.
“Sugg’s project is a powerful example of how deeply researched scholarship can illuminate critical social issues within our own community,” said University Librarian Kevin Butterfield. “Her thoughtful use of diverse library materials not only enriches our understanding of Richmond’s history but also opens important conversations about access and equity today.”
The undergraduate winner is Ethan Riddle, whose project “The Strategic Failure of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare” stood out for its originality and scholarly rigor. Completed in the Knowledge Management course Maritime Strategy and nominated by faculty member Lionel Mew, Riddle’s research effectively brings historical and strategic analysis to life, demonstrating a sophisticated use of library resources and clarity of argumentation.
“Riddle’s work exemplifies how strong library research can enhance the study of military history and strategy,” Butterfield added. “His project showcases the ability to synthesize a wealth of historical documents and strategic theory into a clear, compelling narrative that advances our appreciation of complex wartime decision-making.”
Both recipients will have the opportunity to select books related to their research to be added to the University’s library collection, each bearing a bookplate honoring their scholarship. Their names will also be inscribed on the John Miers Award plaque displayed in Boatwright Memorial Library, creating a lasting testament to their academic achievements.
The award was created to celebrate the legacy of John Miers. C’13, a beloved alum whose passion for libraries and research inspired many. Miers, who passed away in 2019 after a brief illness, obtained his degree through the SPCS Weekend College program and went on to work as a university librarian until his death. His classmates and the University community established this award to recognize the vital role of library research in academic success.
Butterfield emphasized the continuing importance of the award: “These projects truly embody the spirit of John Miers’ passion for research. It is inspiring to witness current students pushing the boundaries of knowledge through rigorous and innovative library work. This award helps foster a lasting culture of scholarship that honors John’s memory.”
An award ceremony and reception were held on October 22, 2025, in the Special Programs Building, which houses the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Guests included SPCS faculty and staff, nominating faculty, classmates, colleagues, family and friends. Both Sugg and Riddle are employees of the University: Sugg serves as Deputy Director of Athletics for Policy and Sports Management while Riddle serves as ETC Convenience Store Lead in Dining Services.
