Degrees at SPCS

The School of Professional & Continuing Studies awards undergraduate and graduate degrees. As one of five schools of the University, our degrees are issued by the University of Richmond. Diplomas for SPCS degrees are University of Richmond diplomas and include both the School in which the degree was earned and the name of the degree.

Bachelor’s Degrees

Our bachelor’s degrees require 120 semester hours. Up to 60 semester hours of prior coursework may be transferred into a bachelor’s degree. We also accept portfolio assessments of prior experience as transfer credit.

Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts (BALA)

Offers the major in Liberal Arts. Highly customizable undergraduate degree incorporates critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills, marketable skills that can be applied to any workplace setting.

Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies (BSPS)

Includes majors in Data Analytics, Human Resource Management, Information Security, Information Systems & Cybersecurity, IT Management, Organizational Studies and Paralegal Studies. A 3-course professional core anchors all BSPS majors, covering the important workplace skills of leadership, applied ethics and applies statistics. With a foundation in liberal arts, our BSPS degree also incorporates critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills.

Master’s Degrees

Our master’s degrees require 30-37 semester hours, and up to 9 semester hours of prior graduate coursework may be transferred into a master’s degree upon approval by the program chair. Our master’s degrees do not require writing a thesis.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) 

Includes specializations in Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy Studies. Designed for current educators in public and private sectors, our M.Ed. programs prepare educators to take on leadership roles in curriculum development, in instructional design and assessment, and in administration and management.

Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM)

Designed for current and aspiring HR managers who wish to expand their career options and advance in the field. Provides a strong foundation in policy, strategy, economics, research and organizational psychology while providing opportunities to focus on global leadership, talent management, information systems and more.

Master of Liberal Arts (MLA)

Designed for general graduate study, provides methodological foundation for customized research projects in the humanities and social sciences. Includes a required core along with a student-selected focus in consultation with the program chair.

Master of Nonprofit Studies (MNS)

Includes a 15-month track in additional to a traditional part-time study option. Designed for current and aspirant nonprofit professionals who seek to advance in the field or improve existing operations. Provides a strong foundation in nonprofit management, finances, ethics, and resource and talent development along with research design and content specialization electives.

Master of Organizational Effectiveness (MOE)

Designed for professonials and pre-professionals seeking to lead ethically and effectively in a global environment through applied leadership, ethical reasoning, and data-driven decision-making. Provides concentrations in Data Analytics, HR Management, Organizational Development & Change, and Organizations & Civil Society. Requires 30 semester hours.

Master of Teaching (MT)

Our primary route to teacher licensure for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree already. Addresses curriculum development and instruction, management, differentiation and licensure. Requires 14 semester hours (1 semester) of teaching internship in addition to the 30 semester hours of coursework required for the degree.
