Master of Teaching

Prepare to become a school teacher

Complete coursework for Virginia teacher licensure

Prepare yourself to earn a Virginia teaching license by earning a Master of Teaching degree at the University of Richmond.

Take coursework toward Virginia licensure — and a master’s degree.

Our Master of Teaching program prepares graduates to earn a teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education and teach students at elementary, middle and secondary levels. In addition to rigorous coursework, all students complete a student teaching experience in a local school division.

And earning a master’s degree qualifies you for any local school division pay increases that may be offered.

Apply your passion for teaching.

Prepare to teach across disciplines in elementary school, or apply your undergraduate major and experience toward teaching specific subjects in middle or secondary contexts. We offer teaching certification prep coursework in three areas:

  • Elementary (preK-6)
  • Secondary (grades 6-12 in English, history, social sciences & science)
  • Comprehensive (preK-12 in languages and visual & theater arts)

A valuable asset to local schools.

Central Virginia school divisions recognize the quality of teachers who complete our degrees, demonstrated by the consistent naming of several of our graduates as division-level teachers and first-year teachers of the year.
