2020 Osher Fundraising Report

The Osher Institute at the University of Richmond has set its 2020 annual fundraising goal at $25,000 from 17-18 percent of current Osher membership. All gifts made to Osher during calendar year 2020 through the Osher Fundraising Campaign are recognized in the Donor Honor Roll.

Similar to the 2019 fundraising effort, some funds raised during 2020 will be used to support special classes and events. Other funds will be held in reserve to support our long-term sustainability efforts so that lifelong learning opportunities prosper for years to come.

Our Osher fundraising efforts are supported in part through a capacity-building grant our Osher Institute received from the Bernard Osher Foundation. In 2021, our Osher Institute may apply for a fifth and final year grant. We believe our grant application will be strong once again if together we continue our Osher’s trends of strong membership retention and growth and of member gifts of time, talent and financial support of our Osher.

Due to changes in tax laws, some Osher members and friends of Osher aged 70½ have made a choice to make their charitable gifts directly from their traditional IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). If you would like to learn more about potential tax advantages of QCDs, please reach out to Rhonda McIlwain or Amy Edwards.

New in 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes provisions that impact charitable gifts made in 2020. Generally, for individuals who do not itemize deductions on their federal tax returns, the CARES Act created a temporary above-the-line charitable tax deduction up to $300. For individuals who itemize tax deductions on their federal tax returns, the cap on deductions for contributions has been lifted. For 2020, individuals who itemize may deduct cash gifts to public charities up to 100% of adjusted gross income. This limit is reduced dollar-for-dollar by other itemized charitable deductions, and does not apply to gifts made to donor advised funds (DAFs). Any excess can be carried forward for five (5) years.
