COVID-19 Temporary Academic Policy

The following academic policy has been adopted in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent changes in instructional delivery and learning experiences.

Temporary Grading Policy

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies has created the following grading option available only for Spring 2020 for all credit-bearing courses offered in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies:

SPCS students have the option to receive a standard letter grade (A-F) OR to opt for a Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) grading option for Spring 2020 only.

Undergraduate Courses

The level of performance necessary to earn credit in a Credit/No Credit course is D- or better, consistent with the current standards for P/F courses and Satisfactory Academic Progress.

  • A passing grade will be recorded as CR on the permanent record. The credit will be added into credit earned toward graduation and will not affect the grade point average.
  • A failing grade will be recorded as NC on the permanent record and will not affect the grade point average.

Graduate Courses

The level of performance necessary to earn credit in a Credit/No Credit course is B- or better, consistent with the current standards for P/F courses and Satisfactory Academic Progress.

  • A passing grade will be recorded as CR on the permanent record. The credit will be added into credit earned toward graduation and will not affect the grade point average.
  • A failing grade will be recorded as NC on the permanent record and will not affect the grade point average.

Choose Your Option

Students may select the CR/NC grading option for any course in which they are enrolled in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies in Spring 2020 by completing a survey in BannerWeb.

  • The deadline for making your selection is 5 p.m. EDT on April 24, 2020.
  • Selecting the CR/NC grading option for a course is permanent. The course may not be returned to a standard grading option.
  • For the Spring 2020 semester only, there is no limit on the number of CR/NC courses in which a student may be enrolled.

Questions about the Policy

How should a student request the Credit/No Credit option for Spring 2020?

Students should log in to BannerWeb and complete the Spring 2020 SPCS Survey, which has been created and is managed by the Registrar’s Office. To access the survey, select “Answer a Survey" in the Personal Information tab. Additional details are available on the Register's Office website.

When will the portal be available to make the selection?

The portal is now open and will remain open until 5 p.m. April 24, 2020.

Once you submit the survey, you cannot go back and change your answers.

Please read the Temporary Academic Policy above carefully and discuss questions or concerns with your Academic Advisor or Program Chair before making a decision.

What is the deadline for selecting the Credit/No Credit option?

The deadline for selecting the Credit/No Credit grade option is April 24, 2020, at 5 p.m.

Please read the Temporary Academic Policy above carefully and discuss questions or concerns with your Academic Advisor or Program Chair before making a decision.

There is no advantage to submitting the survey early. Since your response cannot be changed once submitted, you have time to discuss the option with your advisor or chair before the April 24 deadline.

Will I receive a confirmation message when I submit the survey?

No, you will not receive a confirmation message via BannerWeb. To confirm that your response has been submitted, return to the “Answer a Survey” section in BannerWeb. If the survey no longer appears, your response has been submitted.

What other information will I need to submit a CR/NC grade request?

You’ll need the CRN, subject and course number for the courses in which you are requesting a CR/NC grade. For example: CRN 12345, PSYC 343U. You can find this information in the Student Detail Schedule in BannerWeb; click the Student Services tab, select Registration, select term – Spring 2020 and then select Student Detail Schedule.

Will faculty know which of their students has selected the CR/NC option?

Faculty will not know which students have selected the CR/NC option.

Will selecting CR apply the same to undergraduate classes where a 'C' or better is required to earn credit?

Yes, selecting CR will earn credit toward the course and can be used to meet other undergraduate course prerequisites that require a C or better in this course.

Does this temporary academic policy apply to courses taken during summer 2020 or beyond?

No, this temporary policy applies only to courses taken during Spring 2020.

Has the withdrawal deadline in SPCS been extended?

No, the withdrawal deadline in SPCS has not been extended.

Can I still receive an 'I' or 'Y' grade?

Yes, grades for incompletes can still be administered in consultation with your instructor. Incomplete grades have specific agreed-upon make-up requirements and deadlines. Students should read the Grading Policies section (look in the “Course Administration” tab) of the SPCS Catalog closely and talk with your Academic Advisor and instructor about questions.
