Summer Scholars: Monday-Friday, July 16-27

The University of Richmond School of Professional & Continuing Studies is pleased to announce our 2012 Summer Scholars Program!

Our two-week program is designed for commuter students. It provides an intensive and fun on-campus experience for rising high school juniors and seniors who are college bound. For 2012, Summer Scholars combines a rich academic experience with tailored extra-curricular activities including SAT Preparation workshops, college essay writing workshops and financial planning for college workshops.

Applicants who will benefit from this program should aspire to educational enrichment in a college preparatory program. Admitted students should come prepared for the challenge of a rewarding and intensive academic program that includes classes along with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to help you prepare for future college experience.

Morning Session Courses

These classes are taught by University of Richmond professors and will introduce college-level curriculum. Courses consist of lectures, presentations and assessments, classroom simulations (Microeconomics), lab experiments (Biogenetics), on-campus directed group study/research, and some at-home assignments.

Principles of Microeconomics with Experiments

Inexpensive bananas, iPads, and global warming: What do they have in common? They each are the result of markets. When do markets produce good outcomes for society, and when do they produce bad outcomes? How can we prevent the bad outcomes? Should we have a market for human kidneys, too? You will learn the economic approach to answering these questions, as well as how we can achieve socially efficient outcomes. In-class experiments will model markets.

Biogenetics & Contemporary Issues in Biology

If you are interested in a career in medicine or biotechnology, this is the course for you. You will study microbiology, genetics, gene transfer, gene therapy, cloning, stem cell research, pathogenesis, genetically-modified organisms, and the transfer of antibiotic resistance. You will be exposed to current research examples by University of Richmond undergraduates, and have a chance to discuss the medical, environmental and ethical issues involved. Hands-on research will allow you to collect common bacterial samples to analyze antibiotic resistance. Subsequent studies will investigate the potential to induce bacteria to greater resistance. Molecular biology techniques and databases will supplement this investigation.
