Professional Development for Educators

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies offers graduate education classes for teachers at a significant discount. Graduate classes are a convenient way to earn professional development (PD) credits needed for licensure renewal. We offer courses to help professional educators achieve the following:

  • Address initial and renewal licensure requirements
  • Satisfy provisional license requirements
  • Take coursework toward an add-on endorsement in Gifted Education
  • Take coursework related to ESL and Special Educaton
  • Take coursework focused on high need areas and hot topics in education

Fall 2017

Registration for Fall 2017 is now open. Classes begin Monday, August 28. Review the list of available classes (below) for descriptions, schedules and professors.

We offer professional development coursework toward and add-on endorsement in Gifted Education as well as coursework related to ESL and Special Education.

Review Licensure Renewal Requirements

VA DOE Licensure Renewal

Visit the Virginia Department of Education Licensure page for details on renewal requirements. Graduate classes count 90 points toward total renewal requirements. Be sure classes you plan to take will address any additional endorsement or licensure requirements.

Contact your division professional development officer or licensure officer for additional information, or contact the Virginia DOE directly.

2. Register Online
New Registrations

Register Online

Select the option to Create a New Account. You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail prompting you to set a password. After setting your password to log in, complete the required fields and select your class.

  • Once your student record is created, you’ll be registered for the class you selected.
  • You’ll receive confirmation of your University of Richmond ID (UR ID) by postal mail.
  • Once you receive your UR ID, please activate your network account for Blackboard and email.
  • Please monitor BannerWeb to verify your enrollment.
Returning Students

If you have previously attended the University of Richmond, please call (804) 289-8133 to be reactivated. If you’ve been away from the University for more than one year, you must reapply following the instructions for New Registrations.

Once your student record is activated, you’ll receive a reminder of your UR ID by postal mail. You must use it to register online via BannerWeb.

3. Make Payments
Pay Fees

Make tuition payments via BannerWeb or in the Student Accounts Office by 5 p.m. on the first day of classes. Contact the Bursar’s Office with questions at (804) 289-8147.

Late registration fee begins on the second day of classes.

Order Texts

Purchase your textbooks online at the UR Bookstore, or contact the University Bookstore at (804) 289-8491.

Some professors may post required text purchases in Blackboard. You must activate your network account to access Bannerweb, Blackboard, and email.

This course explores the concepts of Gifted Education, Talent Development and Creativity (GETDC), and examines their factors, measurement, and application to education. Description
This course explores the characteristics and supports needs of students with disabilities in the general education setting and delves into the development of individual education planning and group instruction at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Specific learning strategies, multisensory approaches, and organizational and environmental considerations will be investigated through the scope and sequence of the general education curriculum. Alternative ways of instruction and assessment will be examined to support student learning needs with effective and student-appropriate strategies and accommodations to promote successful integration with nondisabled peers in general education classrooms and, as appropriate, in other instructional settings, representing the continuum of special education services.

Description
This course provides information on the history of exceptional students in relation to education, current law, and accepted methods for referral, assessment, and identification. It covers major program models and methods of differentiating instruction to meet the rate and level of learning of those students identified. The course gives the learner an understanding of ways to meet the affective needs of the gifted and talented student in the regular classroom and lists resources for teachers and parents who would like more information about the talented and gifted.

Description
This course provides students with critical information and hands-on practice regarding the development and implementation of the Individual Education Program (IEP), the federally required document that describes all the components of special education services and safeguards for students with disabilities. Participants will learn regulatory background, essential components, procedural requirements, implementation practices, and monitoring strategies that support effective IEP implementation and lead to positive student outcomes. Participants will analyze and evaluate IEPs, gaining expertise in IEP development and implementation.
