Permaculture Design

Shenandoah Permaculture Institute LogoThis program has been canceled for spring 2017.

The University of Richmond and the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute have partnered to offer the only Permaculture Design Certificate program in the Richmond Region.

Permaculture is a design science that models itself on the patterns found in nature while applying them to human forms — from farms to economies and more.

Because each element in a landscape or the built environment affects every other element at a site, a complete, comprehensive assessment is tantamount to develop healthy, productive, energy efficient relationships between elements for the benefit of everyone involved in day to day operations.

By paying attention to all the details — topography, climate, water, wind, sun, activity nodes and corridors, buildings, machinery and tools, the waste stream, plants and animals — we can make best use of what is already on the ground, and what we intend to put there. With a dynamic interaction of elements in process, and an assessment of both spatial and temporal attributes, organized around sound ecological principles, we can maximize yields and balance the landscape.

Through 72-hours of workshops over four weekends, and using hands-on activities, field trips, presentations, conversations, collaboration, and a site-specific design project challenge, students will gain permaculture design credentials that are ready for real-world applications in both your personal life and business opportunities.

Program Features

  • Team of experienced instructors with backgrounds in organic farming, green building, natural health, counseling and environmental management
  • Field trips to local permaculture projects
  • Collaborative hands-on design project on a site in the Richmond area — work with a client and develop a professional design
