Brewing Education

The University of Richmond School of Professional & Continuing Studies, in collaboration with community partners around the state of Virginia, offers a professional beer brewing program for those interested in entering and advancing in the growing craft beer industry.

The Beer Brewer Professional Certificate program guides students through the entire craft brewing business, from procuring high quality ingredients and raw materials through the proper handling, processing, packaging and distribution of the final product.

The program highlights local, sustainable practices by partnering with regional suppliers, breweries and distributors. Students who complete the certificate program will be well prepared to enter the craft brewing industry in a variety of roles.

Community Partnerships

The Beer Brewer Professional Certificate program started in Richmond and is offered through the School of Professional & Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond. We’ve entered into partnerships with breweries, communities and colleges around the state to offer the program outside Central Virginia.

In Central Virginia (RVA), we offer the program in partnership with local Richmond-area craft breweries and brewing suppliers.
In Coastal Virginia (Tidewater), we offer the program in partnership with ODU’s School of Continuing Education and the Coastal Virginia Brewery Alliance.
In Northern Virginia (NOVA), we offer the program in partnership with local craft breweries, brew suppliers, and a brewing yeast lab.

Brewing Education Course

Business of Craft Brewing

Level: Advanced
Learning Mode: In-person, instructor led

This course addresses the business side of craft brewing, including choosing among brewery models, developing strategic plans, preparing financial plans and conducting fiscal analyses, and creating brewery marketing and sales plans.
