JOI 2017 Outcomes

The goal of the Institute is to create a core group of K-12 teacher-scholars in all content areas who know how to apply the arts to teach the core curriculum.

Objectives

  • To understand the basic pedagogical philosophy behind an interdisciplinary approach to teaching the curriculum
  • To gain an appreciation and understanding of experiential, constructivist, and inquiry-based education and how it influences the curriculum
  • To learn how to view and utilize the visual, performing, and literary arts in a way that instills confidence in application and assessment (Fear No Art!)

Requirements

Non-credit (Up to 90 recertification points)

  1. Attendance at all five days of the Joan Oates Institute, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (45 recertification points)
  2. Communication with the instructor throughout the full length of the course.

The following activities may earn additional recertification points in coordination with your school division’s licensure office.

  • Completion of arts integrated unit/lesson plans (15 recertification points)
  • Completion of an educational project research report (15 recertification points)
  • Presenting your arts integrated unit as professional development (15 recertification points)

EDUC 503U Graduate (3 credits = 90 recertification points) 

  • Attendance at all five days of the Joan Oates Institute, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  1. Communication with the instructor throughout the full length of the course.
  2. Completion of an arts integrated unit plan, submitted as an electronic portfolio. DUE: July 14, 2017

Outcomes

Participants will create an educational plan to integrate the arts into their local school curriculum, learn about arts integration resources, and join a network of professional colleagues interested in integrating creativity and sparking curiosity in their classrooms. The innovative lessons and unit plans developed in this course can become the basis of a PIA ECT Award proposal, PBL or IB project. Unit plans, where applicable, will be due Friday, July 14, by 5:00 pm.
